WHAT WE DO

The General Services Department is an internal service provider (ISP) for the City of Fresno.  Our Divisions include Central Printing, Facilities Management, Fleet Management and Purchasing.

General Services Department Outreach Events

The City of Fresno's General Services, Public Works and Public Utilities Departments partnered to celebrate National Public Works Week.  On Tuesday, May 20th in front of City Hall, there was a street fair and equipment show, and City Departments and outside vendors were on hand providing information to City staff and the general public about the services they provide.  The following day, all three departments again joined forces to celebrate staff and their contribution to maintaining the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works.

Executive Summary
The Administration Division provides direction and support for the divisions of the General Services Department (GSD) which include: Central Printing, Facilities Management, Fleet Management and Purchasing.

The Administration Division provides support to allow each division to focus on their primary objectives and improve their overall performance. To meet the Division’s objectives, the following will be implemented:

  • Business Plans will be reviewed and updated annually.
  • An effective training program that measurably provides added value to services provided.  Customer service will be emphasized.
  • Develop processes to effectively measure and report performance. Identify areas for performance improvements.
  • Optimize use of technology available to increase efficiency and streamline document and accounting processes throughout the department.
  • Continuous research and development of best business practices and strategic planning.
  • Create an enjoyable work environment for all employees of the department

Mission Statement
The purpose of the General Services Department is to provide quality support services which include Central Printing, Facilities Management, Fleet Management, and Purchasing utilizing the most efficient and cost effective practices.

Did You Know...Quick Facts  

26% of the General Services Department budget is pass-through costs (fuel, leases, utilities, special projects)

In FY 2008 the Purchasing Division processed $195 million in procurements and added 20 multi-year requirements contracts.

The Facilities Management Division was a key partner in the Kern Street/SPORTSTOWN project and continues to be involved with the Convention Center remodeling project.

The Central Printing Division uses "state of the art" software to produce graphically designed flyers, posters, banners and inserts of any kind.

By the end of FY 2009 120 of the 142 refuse trucks in the City's fleet will be powered using Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) which costs 1/3 less per gallon and burns at least 40% cleaner than its diesel equivalent.
