Planning plays a vital role in the City of Fresno. While long range planners maintain the vision for growth and development for the city, current planners are responsible for implementing that vision along with assisting residents and developers to move forward with their individual development goals. Whether it is adding a mother-in-law unit to a single family home, or building a new restaurant, current planners help move citizens through the development process as seamlessly as possible.
The Current Planning Division implements the City’s General Plan by utilizing a variety of tools, including the City’s Development Code (or zoning ordinance), which can be found in Chapter 15 of the City’s Municipal Code. The Development Code, Specific Plans, Overlay Districts, and special use permits, such as Conditional Uses and Variances, all regulate the use of land in the City.
