02/13/13  Mayor Swearengin: City of Fresno to Implement ‘Deeper Layoff Plan’ Over Next Two Weeks
FRESNO – Mayor Ashley Swearengin today said she has directed City Manager Mark Scott to implement a “deeper layoff plan” over the next two weeks to address financial challenges faced by the City because of a delay in implementing a residential solid waste franchise.Mayor Swearengin made her remarks in response to a determination by the Fresno County Clerk and City Clerk that City unions were successful in collecting enough signatures to force the privatization of the City’s residential solid waste service back to City Council to determine whether the issue will be taken to the ballot.“Because of the delay in implementing the residential solid waste as budgeted, I have directed the City Manager to implement another layoff plan,” Mayor Swearengin said. “For the last three weeks, he has been working with his staff and the department heads to finalize that plan >more

02/05/13  Mayor Swearengin Lauds Downtown Property Owners;Supports ‘I Believe in Downtown Fresno’ Initiative
Fresno, CA – Mayor Ashley Swearengin today lauded the Downtown Fresno Partnership and its member property owners for their efforts in helping to revitalize downtown.“The exciting progress we’re seeing in downtown is because property owners said that, even in a down economy, we believe in ourselves, we believe in our city, and we’re going to put our money on the table to prove it,” Mayor Swearengin said at the State of Downtown Breakfast.”Mayor Swearengin said those efforts produced positive results during 2012, including: 162,950 people attended Downtown Fresno Partnership events during the year; Two-thirds of downtown businesses saw an increase in foot traffic because of the ice rink and one-third of downtown businesses saw an increase in sales. >more

Fresno - The City of Fresno has expanded its State of California Enterprise Zone (EZ) designation. Effective January 10, 2013, the City of Fresno EZ now includes all of the indicated areas on the attached map.Businesses in the EZ can receive up to $37,440 in state tax credits for each eligible employee hired. >more

The San Francisco Giants World Championship Trophy Tour presented by Bank of America will continue its three-month public tour in Fresno this February 5, 2013. Fans will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with the trophies and to support their local Junior Giants Baseball League by making a voluntary contribution during the trophy viewing. FRESNO -- Moody's International yesterday announced that it has downgraded the City of Fresno's lease revenue and pension obligation bonds from Baa1 to Ba1 and Ba2 ratings. This is another in a series of troublesome downgrades of the City's debt reflecting the financial community's ongoing concerns about the City's fiscal condition.
