FRESNO – City of Fresno officials today announced that Shepherd Avenue will be closed between Perrin and Millbrook avenues for more than two months for construction of the Sugar Pine Trail underpass project beginning on Monday, June 10.

The portion of Shepherd Avenue between Perrin and Millbrook will be closed beginning Monday at 9 a.m. and will be closed 24 hours a day until Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Detours will be in place in both directions. Eastbound Shepherd traffic should turn left onto Perrin to Champlain, then turn right on Champlain to return to Shepherd. Westbound Shepherd traffic should turn right on Champlain, then turn left on Perrin to return to Shepherd.

The City of Fresno has contracted with Floyd Johnston Construction to construct the underpass for the Sugar Pine Trail. The $1.478 project will include construction of a 12-foot diameter pre-cast reinforced concrete arch tunnel system under Shepherd Avenue to allow unimpeded vehicular traffic flow along Shepherd Avenue at the Sugar Pine Trail crossing. The project also including lighting within the tunnel and at its entrances, landscaping, storm water facilities, the relocation of an existing 12-inch water main, and repair of existing street improvements affected by the project.

The underpass is consistent with the adopted City of Fresno Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trails Master Plan and will be the fifth trail underpass in the City of Fresno and the ninth underpass on the Fresno Sugar Pine-Clovis Old Town Trail corridor.

The $1.478 million project will be paid for by federal funds.
