City Officials, Partners Celebrate Opening of Facility to Serve Southwest Fresno Residents
FRESNO – Mayor Ashley Swearengin today joined other city officials and partners to celebrate the opening of the California and Elm Community Center and Gym, which will provide important programming and recreational opportunities for residents of Southwest Fresno.

“Today, we see the results of the collaborative efforts of community-based organizations, residents and public agencies in working toward the common goal of neighborhood revitalization,” Mayor Swearengin said, who was joined by Councilmember Oliver Baines and City Manager Bruce Rudd at the event. “This center is an asset that will provide benefits not only to Southwest Fresno, but to the entire community.”

The center will be operated by a coalition that consists of Leadership 1st, the West Fresno Family Resource Center and St. Rest Baptist Church. Leadership 1st is a national community development organization that focuses on educational initiatives.

The facility will be a “one-stop shop” for community support services and recreational activities designed to meet the needs of families that reside in Southwest Fresno. It contains a large gym, male and female locker rooms, computer lab footprint, industrial-size kitchen, dual purpose meeting rooms and a future designated green space.

Programming that will be offered at the center includes computer literacy, health and fitness, senior activities, mentoring, youth citizen/leadership development, youth empowerment services, vocational development, mentoring and tutoring, among others.
