Mayor Swearengin, City Council Commend Inspirational Roosevelt High Rugby Team
Mayor Ashley Swearengin and Fresno City Council members today proclaimed “Roosevelt High School Rugby Team Day” to honor the inspirational efforts of the team. Each team member also had today declared his “day” in Fresno.
“The efforts of Roosevelt High’s rugby team speak volumes for the rest of the community,” Mayor Swearengin said at a City Hall ceremony honoring the team. “They have faced and conquered obstacles, both on and off the field. We’ve all been inspired by them, and we’re thrilling at their success.”
Mayor Swearengin was joined by councilmembers Clinton Olivier and Sal Quintero in the ceremony recognizing the rugby team’s efforts.
According to the proclamation, the team faced incredible obstacle in its first season. Many of the team members are children of migrant farm workers who speak little or no English and also live in impoverished neighborhoods where violence and gangs have a strong presence, according to the proclamation.
Team members received individual certificates for their efforts, and Tom Ferdinandi of Me-N-Ed’s Pizza also announced that it would hold a pizza party for the team at Victory Grill.
