CITY OF FRESNO WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO 9/11 HERO AT PARK GRAND OPENING CEREMONY FRIDAY
The City of Fresno would like to invite the media and community to join Council Member Lee Brand, Interim City Manager Bruce Rudd and PARCS Director Randall Cooper for a ribbon cutting and grand opening of Todd Beamer Park, 9797 N. Maple, in northeast Fresno, Friday, February 26, 2010 at 12:00pm. In addition, the City has coordinated a special call-in from David Beamer, father of Todd Beamer, the 9/11 hero for whom the park has been named. Former Council Member Jerry Duncan and students from Copper Hills Elementary will also join the ribbon cutting celebration and be the first to enjoy the various amenities in the park.
A tribute of this magnitude is fitting for American hero Todd Beamer, known for his ‘Let’s Roll’ response to the terrorist attack aboard United Airlines Flight 93, on September 11, 2001. Although brief, his connection to the Central Valley was established after his family relocated to California. Todd Beamer attended Fresno State on a baseball scholarship in 1987 before returning home to Wheaton, Illinois to attend college.
Mayor Swearengin stated, “It’s an honor to dedicate this park in Todd Beamer’s name and establish a permanent memorial in our community to honor his heroic actions and commitment to our nation.” This $3 million dollar facility provides much needed green space in Northeast Fresno and features a lighted soccer field, two shaded tot lots, a water play area (Splash Park) basketball court, dog park, restroom facility, perimeter walking path with fitness stations and a skate park.
