Water Meter Education Campaign Receives National Honors
09/22/2010

A comprehensive effort by the City of Fresno to educate the community about the installation of water meters in single family homes has earned national recognition. The City-County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA) has honored the City’s Public Utilities Department with a 2010 Savvy Award for its public outreach campaign, titled “Are You Ready for Water Meters?”

The Savvy Awards salute the very best in strategic marketing and communications planned and carried out by city, county, or local agency marketing professionals. During its 22 year history, 3CMA has received more than 10,000 Savvy entries. Winning Savvy entries, in many cases, have become the benchmarks for all local government communication efforts.

The City’s water meter public outreach campaign took top honors in the highly competitive category of “Go Green Communications Program.” Judges praised the effort as “a monumental task met with great success.” Mayor Ashley Swearengin said, “The City’s utilities department has done a truly outstanding job in communicating a complex issue to the public in a creative and effective way. This is much deserved recognition for the entire team.”

Rene Ramirez, Director of Public Utilities, credits much of the success of the water meter outreach program to the strong collaboration between his department and Jeffery Scott Agency (JSA). “The combination of commitment and creativity by both our staff and JSA has produced a winning program for the citizens of Fresno. Keeping the community informed about this monumental project is no small task and I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”

City Manager Mark Scott, a founding member of 3CMA, complimented the department on its achievement. “I’ve seen a lot of excellent public outreach campaigns from across the country during my time as a member of 3CMA,” Scott said. “The effort by our public utilities department to educate our community about water meters is certainly among the very best.”

The Savvy Award will be officially presented to the staff of the Public Utilities Department at Thursday’s City Council meeting, which begins at 10 a.m. For additional information about the City’s water meter project or water conservation, please call 621-5480 or visit www.fresnowater.org.
