New Directories Will Highlight Fresno Businesses, Encourage Residents and Visitors to Buy Locally

Mayor Ashley Swearengin today announced that two new directories will highlight businesses in the City of Fresno to emphasize the importance of supporting locally owned businesses.

Joined by Fresno Bee Publisher Will Fleet, Mayor Swearengin announced the launch of the City’s first “Directory of Neighbor-Owned Businesses,” a special edition publication that will be included in the Fresno Bee on Saturday, Oct. 23, and distributed to 75,000 Fresno residences.

In addition, Mayor Swearengin announced the launch of the “Directory of Fresno Businesses,” an online directory of more than 18,000 businesses in the City with a current business license.

Mayor Swearengin and Fleet said the “Directory of Neighbor-Owned Businesses” will include more than 1,600 locally owned, independent restaurants, retailers and entertainment venues in the City of Fresno who have a current business license.

“It’s important for all Fresno residents to make sure that we’re aware of our locally owned businesses and that we buy from them as much as possible,” Mayor Swearengin said. “If every Fresno resident shifted just 10 percent of their spending to local businesses, we would be able to generate an additional $200 million in economic activity and create 2,000 new jobs.”

“We are delighted to partner with Mayor Swearengin and her staff at the city on this worthwhile local project," Fleet said. "We’re confident that this directory will be a great resource for local residents and visitors to Fresno. The locally owned businesses in this directory reflect our community's character and provide unique opportunities for their customers."

The directory was named a top priority in November 2009 by Mayor Swearengin’s Local Independent Restaurant and Retailers Affinity Group, a group of more than 20 local business owners in the restaurant and retail industry who have been working with the City of Fresno to identify opportunities for the City of Fresno to better promote and support their industry.

In addition to the “Directory of Neighbor-owned Businesses,” the City of Fresno is also launching the “Directory of Fresno Businesses,” an on-line directory of over 18,000 businesses located in the City of Fresno with a current business license and can be found by logging onto

The “Directory of Fresno Businesses” was built by a member of Fresno’s Local Technology Affinity Group,, and will allow business owners to log on using their account number from their business license and add a website, e-mail address, business hours, description of their company and even upload a picture to their profile.

The Restaurant and Retailer Affinity Group has continued to capitalize on this effort by forming their own entity called, FRIBA- the Fresno Regional Independent Business Alliance, which is a business member organization launching a community-wide marketing campaign to educate consumers about the importance of supporting our local, independents.
