Mayor Swearengin Kicks Off 8-week Citizens Academy

Mayor Ashley Swearengin will give 40 local residents, business people and students an introduction to the inner-workings of City Hall tonight as the latest Fresno Citizens Academy gets underway at 6 p.m. The program is designed to provide individuals from the community with a close-up look at city government issues and to promote civic participation. The kick-off session will be held in Council Chambers.

Tonight, Mayor Swearengin will offer participants an overview of current issues facing the City as well as her goals and vision. She will also explain Fresno’s “strong Mayor” form of government and the roles and responsibilities of the City Council, Mayor, City Manager and City departments.

Fresno Citizens Academy sessions are held on consecutive Tuesday nights for 8 weeks, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Upcoming sessions will include presentations on City departments including Police and Fire, Public Utilities, Public Works, Parks, Planning, and Transportation.

The program is free to attend, thanks to a sponsorship from the law firm of Fishman, Larsen, Goldring and Zeitler. Applications are available online at
