| Joined by city officials and representatives of the Fresno Police Officers Association (FPOA), Mayor Ashley Swearengin and Police Chief Jerry Dyer today announced a tentative agreement between the City and FPOA that will preserve front-line police resources and continue to protect public safety. As part of the tentative agreement, FPOA members will forego the scheduled 2 percent salary increases in the 2009-2010 fiscal year to help the City address its budget challenges. | The state Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a notice to Herndon Water Company today warning of possible contamination in its water system. The water company’s customers have been advised to boil water from the system before drinking or using it in food preparation.The privately owned Herndon Water Company serves approximately 70 homes in Herndon Town in northwest Fresno, near Highway 99. >more |

| Sunday’s unseasonable hot weather provided the City of Fresno with an early test of its Emergency Cooling Center activation plan. 2009 will mark the fourth year in which the City will provide an opportunity for residents to get a respite from extreme heat. | City Manager Andy Souza today announced the appointment of three public members to an advisory panel to help select an independent reviewer to provide City policymakers and the public with an objective, third-party analysis of internal affairs investigations conducted by the Fresno Police Department. The three public members will join Mayor Ashley Swearengin, Council President Cynthia Sterling, Police Chief Jerry Dyer, a representative of the Fresno Police Officers Association and the City Manager on the advisory panel. | May is Bicycle Awareness Month and the City of Fresno is encouraging the use of bicycles downtown by installing bike racks on the Fulton Mall. The Public Works Department Traffic Engineering and Street Maintenance Divisions have installed a dozen racks on the mall from Tuolumne to Inyo. Additional racks will be placed in front of and behind City Hall so City employees will be able to commute to work on their bikes. >more |

The 21-member committee will assist with the creation of the city’s Fulton Corridor Specific Plan, encompassing a variety of unique project areas including the Cultural Arts District, Central Business District, South Stadium area and Chinatown. | The City of Fresno would like to notify the public and media that the Department of Parks, After School, Recreation & Community Services (PARCS) will be posting the attached basic health tips at each of its community and neighborhood centers in Fresno, in an effort to reach uninformed pockets of residents in the community. | Students from Manchester Gate Elementary School helped the City of Fresno expand its urban forest on Friday morning by planting four trees near their campus. The Arbor Day planting was accompanied by the posting of new signs in the community heralding Fresno’s recent designation as a “Tree City USA.” Fresno City Council member Blong Xiong was on hand to assist as the students positioned the trees, filled and packed the surrounding soil, and watered them thoroughly. “It’s wonderful to see the next generation already making contributions like this to the betterment of our community,” Xiong said >more |
