| Mayor Ashley Swearengin will join California’s First Lady, Maria Shriver,today at Manchester Center in Fresno for a popular “one stop” event designed to help low-income residents access resources to help them become more financially secure. First Lady Maria Shriver will visit Fresno on behalf of the WE Connect program, a pioneering public/private partnership which provides assistance with programs such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Through EITC, working families earning less than $56,000 per year can obtain refunds of up to $4,800, even if they owe no tax. >more |

| A Quiet Zone Project is now underway downtown to silence train horns along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad corridor from Ventura Street to Olive Avenue. The project has been in development since 2006 and is on track to be completed ahead of schedule in the spring of 2010. The accelerated schedule is being made possible through generous assistance from Fresno Community Regional Medical Center for $245,000 and an interest free loan of $600,000 made to the City of Fresno. >more |

| An operation to close a large homeless encampment in downtown Fresno was successfully completed this morning. | Mayor Ashley Swearengin today joined City Council President Cynthia Sterling and representatives of the Fresno Metropolitan Museum to announce the terms of an agreement outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will allow the Met to continue operating at its current location while protecting the interests of Fresno taxpayers. The terms of the agreement were presented to the Met’s board of trustees at a special meeting this morning, and a motion to accept the conceptual MOU was passed. | This weekend’s hot temperatures will trigger operation of the first City of Fresno Cooling Centers for 2009. Now in its fourth year, the City has refined its cooling center process and will provide free swimming, bus transportation and extended hours at six community centers all summer when temperatures reach 105 or higher.
