Celebrity Chef to Promote WIC Program at Farmers Market
10/27/2009

Celebrity Chef Garrett Henderson will conduct a live “healthy cooking” demonstration at the Fulton Mall Farmers Market on Wednesday, October 28 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. The demonstration at the Market on the Mall is designed to celebrate and promote awareness about an enhancement to WIC, one of the state’s largest nutrition programs.

The California Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program now provides its participants with new checks to purchase an expanded variety of healthy foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables. This is the first major expansion of WIC’s eligible foods list since the program’s inception in 1974.

“Making nutritious choices available to the women, infants and children who participate in the WIC program in California encourages healthier choices and habits,” said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “Nutrition and exercise have always been a huge part of my life and as Governor, I do everything I can to make sure that California is a leader in promoting health and nutrition.”

Chef Henderson is Executive Chef for Slates restaurant, recognized by the California Restaurant Association as the “Best in the Valley.” His live cooking demonstration will incorporate fresh produce donated by Market on the Mall vendors. Fresno’s Certified Farmers Market operates every Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Fulton Mall.

Elliott Balch, Downtown Revitalization Manager for the City of Fresno, said the Market on the Mall provides downtown workers, residents and visitors with a great variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as flowers, candles, and more. “It’s an ideal setting for announcing such a major enhancement to the state’s nutrition program,” Balch said.
