Mayor Swearengin Commends State Assembly for Rejecting Gas Tax Grab
Mayor Ashley Swearengin today issued the following statement after the state Assembly passed a budget that does not include the taking of gas tax revenues from local governments:
“It’s a tremendous relief to the City of Fresno and communities throughout California that the state Assembly has exercised sound judgment in rejecting the unconstitutional gas tax grab.
“Officials from cities and counties from up and down our state have consistently made the case that this gas tax grab would have had a devastating impact on local governments that already have made hard choices to balance their budgets.
“Local governments will be part of the budget solution through borrowing under the principles of Prop 1A. Taking an additional $2 billion through the gas tax grab would have placed an unacceptable burden on us as we work to protect public safety and provide core services.
“I particularly want to commend Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, my fellow mayors in the state’s 10 largest cities, and the League of California Cities for the leadership that they have shown on this issue. I also want to thank Assemblymembers Mike Villines and Juan Arambula for working with us on this issue.”
