Mayor Swearengin Announces Hiring of Barrett Sports Group to Consider Long-Range Solutions to Grizzlies Lease

Mayor Ashley Swearengin today announced that the City of Fresno has hired Barrett Sports Group, a sports management consulting firm with expertise on a wide variety of sports industry issues, to develop and evaluate potential long-range solutions to the City’s lease arrangement with the Fresno Baseball Club, owners of the Fresno Grizzlies.

“Barrett Sports Group has helped a broad range of public and private sector groups analyze and find solutions to complex financial issues,” Mayor Swearengin said. “We look forward to working with them on the City’s lease arrangement with the Fresno Grizzlies to assure that the team will continue to operate in downtown Fresno for many years to come while protecting the interests of Fresno taxpayers.”

Barrett Sports Group, based in Manhattan Beach, Calif., has worked on more than 500 sports industry projects across the country.

Mayor Swearengin said one of the top priorities for the Barrett Sports Group will be working on long-range solutions to the lease arrangement.

“It isn’t in anyone’s interest – not the City’s, not the Grizzlies’ and not Fresno’s taxpayers – for us to look for short-term solutions that may have us considering the terms of the lease every year or so,” Mayor Swearengin said. “Instead, we need to look at the lease arrangement in a comprehensive way that gives the Grizzlies an opportunity to succeed over the long term while making sure that we’re protecting the City’s interests.

“I’m confident that we will meet the challenge of reaching an agreement that will provide benefits to all of the parties involved.”
