Parking Summit Prompts Immediate Action

Thursday evening, October 18, 2007, Mayor Autry and City staff met with a dozen business and property owners to hear their concerns regarding downtown parking.

The owner of the Shephard’s Inn restaurant was pleased to find that the parking meters had already been changed from 2 to 4 hour parking as he stepped out to move an employee car from an expired meter on Santa Fe Street next to the restaurant. The metered parking time was changed first thing this morning as promised during last nights Parking Town Hall meeting.

Parking Services Director, Del Estabrook stated, “Meeting personally with citizens to hear their concerns and suggestions initiated some useful ideas and solutions to help solve their parking issues.”

One outcome of the meeting was the formation of a Downtown Parking Taskforce where several business owners volunteered to participate. Other significant takeaways from the meeting were:

Initiating and evaluating a marketing plan for downtown merchants that validates customer parking
Property owners have been contacted to discuss their unique parking issues
The formation of the Downtown Parking Taskforce to evaluate the pricing and usage of meters in the future
