Mayor Autry Launches New Gang Task Force Initiative

(FRESNO , CA May 29, 2006) – Mayor Alan Autry declares his commitment to public safety with the formation of the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Initiative Task Force in a press conference on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 10:00am outside of Council Chambers at Fresno’s City Hall.

Given the violence and other characteristics associated with gangs, heightened cooperation between law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies – prosecutors, parole and probation, jails and courts, crime laboratories and Federal agencies together with social, community service and educational agencies is critical to the success of gang suppression efforts.

Mayor Autry stated, “We know that a criminal or gang member is created long before he or she commits their first crime or joins a gang. The importance of reaching the heart of an at-risk youth before they make a wrong choice has never been greater”.

The major components of the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Initiative focus on:

Prevention, Intervention, Suppression, Re-entry and Economic Development. This initiative will assist youth who are on the cusp of joining a gang or those who are on the verge of leaving the gang lifestyle behind.
