City Of Fresno Completes Synchronization Of Blackstone Avenue From Mckinley Avenue To Herndon Avenue
05/26/2006

(FRESNO , CA May 26, 2006) – Public Works Director David Healey announces the completion of the traffic signal synchronization on Blackstone Avenue from McKinley Avenue to Herndon Avenue.

The installation of fiber-optic cable from traffic signals along Blackstone Avenue, to the City’s Traffic Operations Center (TOC), has made it possible for City traffic engineers to optimize the timing of 17 traffic signals along five miles of Blackstone Avenue.

Fresno drivers will experience the following benefits when they travel along Blackstone Avenue:

  • Decreased delays.
  • Decreased stops at traffic signals.
  • Increased fuel efficiency by approximately two miles per gallon.
  • Increased travel speeds.
  • Improved air quality by reducing emissions such as Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrous oxide (NOx) and Volatile organic compounds (VOC).

These benefits are the first of many that will be achieved as a result of the coordination with the City of Fresno and Caltrans in which the City’s TOC is now jointly managed in order to reduce commuting times and improve regional air quality.

Mayor Autry stated that, “The completion of this project is just another example of our New Normal where using innovation, technology and collaboration has worked to achieve positive outcomes that benefit our entire community.”

The Public Works Department has also secured funding for the synchronization of approximately 100 more signals along 30 miles of roadway on Herndon Avenue, Willow Avenue, Chestnut Avenue, Kings Canyon Road and Ventura Avenue. These additional timing improvements are scheduled for early 2007 after fiber-optic cable is installed along those corridors.

Funding for these traffic and air quality improvements comes from the Federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Program in partnership with the Fresno County Council of Governments.
