Patriots Day Event: Fresno Area Volunteers Recognized

FRESNO , CA ( September 9, 2005) – The media is invited to join Fresno’s Citizen Corps, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Emergency Service Professionals for a special event in commemoration of Patriot’s Day and National Preparedness Month, Saturday September 10, 2005 at 10am in Selland Arena.

The event will include announcements from City and County leaders, a 9-11 Remembrance, updates on the role of CERT volunteers in local disaster response and the swearing-in—as ‘Disaster Service Workers’ (DSW)—of as many as 65 of the 175 community members that have completed 20 hours of FEMA sponsored disaster training and are registered as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers.

Fresno CERT Instructor Kevin McCartney has been serving in Houston in response to Hurricane Katrina and he will be on hand to share his experience as a manager of the Red Cross shelter at the Reliant Center that housed up to 18,000 people. He will relate his first hand account of the disaster volunteer experience and the challenges that face responding to a disaster of this magnitude.
