Median Island Blitz Campaign Makes Major Strides
08/08/2005

FRESNO , CA ( August 8, 2005) – The City of Fresno Median Island Blitz kicked-off on Monday, July 18 th with crews formed from the Public Works Streets Division, Public Utilities Community Sanitation Division, Parks Department and the Local Conservation Corps, with traffic enforcement protection for workers provided by the Police Department Traffic Unit. The initial program contains a little over 6,000,000 square feet of median island and buffer areas on major streets with high traffic volumes and in high populated areas. The initial program calls for cleaning these areas in the first 60 days. The continued program will require the cleaning of all medians, frontage roads, landscape buffers and greenways in the City which totals over 16,000,000 square feet of landscaped area.

( See Median Island Landscape Plan Of Action - pdf format )

The Streets Division was tasked with managing the overall program, and immediately took charge of scheduling and hiring an additional 40 to 50 temporary persons to work on this blitz campaign for a term of 30-90 days. The initial effort is to use City Staff, LCC staff, and temporary staff to clean all the major street medians and buffers during the initial campaign which includes working 7 days per week. A schedule will be created that ensures ongoing maintenance for cleaning islands, repairing irrigation and spraying for weed control continues. To supplement this ongoing maintenance and provide some initial assistance, adults from the Adult Offenders program and the Inmate Work Program will be assigned to work crews with supervision from Permanent Staff.

Since the programs beginning on Monday, July 18, 2005, staff has increased from the initial 30-40 persons to now, 80 persons per day. This number will increase to over 100 persons per day as we continue the Blitz campaign. To date over 2,940,800 square feet of median islands, frontage road islands and landscape road buffers have been cleaned, irrigation repaired, and weed control spraying completed. This number puts the City close to ½ way through the initial 60 day blitz period in just 3 weeks. This allows us to begin looking at the remaining 10,000,000 square foot of landscape needs with hopes of completing all islands and buffers over the next 60 to 90 days.

Some of the major streets cleaned to date include Herndon Avenue, from Willow to Polk. Blackstone Avenue from Olive to Friant Road. Friant Road from Freeway 41 to the City Limits. Kings Canyon Road from Downtown to ½ mile east of Peach Avenue. Kearney Blvd from Fresno Street to Marks. Bullard Avenue from Cedar to Blackstone. McKinley Avenue from Clovis Avenue to Fresno Street.
