Mayor Autry Calls for Five Year Freeze of Prop. 71
FRESNO,CA (January 11, 2005) - Due to the continuing state budget crisis, Mayor Autry is calling for suspension of Proposition 71 for five years. Mayor Autry stated “The State just can't afford this proposition. Its negative effects will ripple down to local governments who are already struggling to provide the most basic services to the public.” The Fiscal Impact from the Legislative Analyst estimates a State cost of about $6 billion over 30 years to pay off both the principal ($3 billion) and interest ($3 billion) on the bonds; with State payments averaging about $200 million per year.
