Governor Supports Innovative Gang Prevention Initiatives

Governor Schwarzenegger announced his support to combat gang violence utilizing an innovative gang prevention initiative dubbed the California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention Program (CalGRIP).  The goal of this anti-gang program is geared to combat gang violence inCalifornia by providing more than $48 million in state and federal funding to local anti-gang efforts that include job training, education and intervention programs.

Immediately following the Governor’s press conference, Mayor Alan Autry and Police Chief Jerry Dyer held a press conference thanking the Governor for acknowledging Fresno ’s initiative during his announcement.

The CalGRIP proposal recognizes the hardest hit communities of gang violence by designating counties as High Intensity Gang Areas (HIGA).  Fresno County carries the HIGA designation.  Additional components of the CalGRIP program specific to the Fresno area include the creation of a gang task force and funding for a GPS ankle bracelet program to track high risk gang offenders.  Mayor Autry and Police Chief Jerry Dyer are excited about the additional resources available to help Fresno combat gang violence.

Friendship Camp

Nestled high in the beauty of theSierra Nevada, the City of Fresno Parks, Recreation and Community Services department held their 4th annual Mayor’s Friendship Camp.  Two buses transported 64 children from the Fresno Unified School District to Camp Fresno Junior at Dinkey Creek to participate in a memorable  weekend of activities and friendship.

The three day, two night experience lent itself to a multitude of activities that included archery, nature hikes, fishing, four corner soccer, traditional campfire skits and more.  New this year was the ‘kitchen duties’ feature that provided campers the opportunity to assist with meal preparation.

The Mayor’s Friendship Camp was created to bring children from all areas of our City together to build unity and diversity by building friendships.

Friends for Fresno Fire Chief's Foundation

The third annual Epicurean Delights benefit for the Fresno Fire Chief’s Foundation was held on May 12, 2007.  Over 400 supporters enjoyed the culinary creations of Fresno Fire Department’s most accomplished cooks and some of the Central Valley’s most well known chefs. The event also featured an extensive silent auction that included exciting vacation packages, one-of-a-kind artwork, fine wines, historic Fresno Fire Department memorabilia and much more.

This year’s event was an enormous success, generating more than $80,000 for the non-profit organization. These funds will help the Fresno Fire Chief’s Foundation continue its mission to provide humanitarian and charitable assistance to the people of Fresno.

New Deputy Mayor Feelin' The Love

It’s been three weeks since I joined you folks at City Hall, and let me first tell you how impressed I am with the talent I see around here.  I’ve had a chance to visit departments and meet many of you in your work environment.  It is clear to me already thatFresno is lucky to have a team like this one.

Indulge me, however, to share a couple of stories about my first few days that, to me, are great examples of celebrating the many wins that we encounter each day.

First, on my first full day in office, I found out that I was to go to the Editorial Board at the Fresno Bee.  Luckily, I didn’t know enough to be afraid so I decided to take a leisurely stroll down the Fulton Mall and continue on in my chair to the Bee office.  As I got further away from the Mall and closer to the Bee, the street got narrower and the traffic was within a foot of hitting me.  I was a little nervous when I felt a large, white City truck pull up next to me with its flashers on; the driver asked, “What the heck are you doin’ out here?” When I told him I was going to the Bee, he let me know that my decision was less than brilliant.  I assured him I was OK and continued on.  As soon as I got to the Bee parking lot, the same driver and truck passed me and waved.  Turns out, he followed me all the way to the Bee to make sure I was safe.  That, my friends, is what I call “feelin’ the love.”.

The other experience that jumps out at me was the first day I ate in the City Hall Café on the first floor.  I met some of the nicest people that I’ve seen in a long time.  They spoiled me rotten and made sure that I had everything I needed to get through lunch.  Not to mention, the food was dang good!  So, I want to send kudos to Willie and Mary Lou Shoemaker. They are first class folks doing a first class job.  I appreciate everyone making me feel welcome and I will look forward to sharing my experiences with you throughout the next twenty months.  We have much of which to be proud, and we all need to celebrate our wins everyday.
