Governor Schwarzenegger Supports Temperance Dam Project

Good news was delivered for residents of the State and Central Valley when Governor Schwarzenegger mentioned in his annual State of the State address on January 5, 2007, “It’s time for California to build water reservoirs again, probably including one on the San Joaquin River.” The governor announced that he is proposing $4.5 billion in bonds that will most likely be used to build two reservoirs, one at Temperance Flat above Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River and a second off-stream on the

San Joaquin River and a second off-stream dam in the Sacramento Valley.  Work is still underway on the feasibility studies for the two proposed dams, with the study on Temperance Flat due out in 2009.  Mayor Autry continues to lead the Central Valley Water Coalition to fight for funding for surface water storage.

Mayors Award for Excellence

In a concerted effort to reward City staff for giving their best every day, on January 31, Mayor Autry presented the Mayor's Award of Excellence to staff from General Services, Parks, Recreation and Community Services and Planning and Development departments.

The Award was in recognition of their extraordinary efforts in the renovation of the Plaza area at the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center. The projected completion date of this project was late March or early April 2007 at a cost of $850,000 dollars. Our City Team was able to take landscape specifications received in October, complete the project December 31, 2006 and save the City over $100,000 dollars!

Congratulations Team Fresno!

2007 Council Reflects the City’s Diverse Population

For the first time in the history of the City of Fresno, the City Council better reflects the diversity of the population it serves.  Fresno has elected a member of our large Southeast Asian community to serve on the council.  Blong Xiong was sworn into office as the council member representing District 1 with fanfare by both the media and the west-central neighborhoods that Xiong now represents.

The top four ethnic populations listed during the 2000 census are now represented in our City government: Caucasian, Hispanic, African-American, and Asian.  The City of Fresno is second only to Minneapolis as the home for the most Hmong residents outside of Asia. Xiong, who previously worked with the Fresno Center for New Americans, looks forward to contributing his unique perspective to the global growth being promoted by the sixth largest city in California.

Fresno Joins Gang Prevention Network

In an effort to positively impact gang prevention efforts in the City of Fresno and around the State, representatives from Fresno and 12 other California cities met in Oakland to share information and expertise in an inaugural meeting of the California Cities Gang Prevention Network.  The purpose of the network is to collaboratively identify viable ways to stop and prevent gang violence and create a model of best practices.  The meeting was sponsored by the National League of Cities (NLC) and the National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD).  Funding was provided by the California Wellness Foundation, the California Endowment, the East Bay Community Foundation and the Richmond Children’s Foundation.  Additional support for the was provided by the California Office of the Attorney General and the City of Oakland.

Relief from Extreme Cold Temperatures

It is an unfortunate situation for any one who finds themselves living on the streets.  Regardless of the circumstances surrounding their situation, it is unconscionable that they should be left to withstand the extreme temperatures on the streets of our City. In November, the City of Fresno began operating several community centers as Warming Centers for anyone seeking

shelter from the cold.  Working in conjunction with the Fresno Rescue Mission and the Poverello House, City staff provides free transportation for any homeless individual who is seeking refuge at City Shelters.  To date, City Warming  Centers have provided warm shelter to more than 1,900 individuals on nights when temperatures were at or below 36 degrees.

Fresno, Connecting a Community

January 2007 marked the opening of the 9th Community Connection Lab as part of the Fresno Connect program.  All of the labs are fully-wired with the latest technology, including FREE internet access to the community.  The program wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the City’s corporate partner, AT&T.
