Council Goals & Accomplishments

Council Goals

  • Promote pedestrian safety and access to all public streets.
  • Ensure that all public buildings and facilities, services, programs and activities are in compliance with ADA regulations.
  • Develop disability awareness and educational outreach programs.
  • Promote inclusion of the disabled community in the City's emergency and disaster preparedness plans.
  • Promote low income and accessible housing.

Council Accomplishments

Toward a Barrier Free Fresno!

  • Work with the City Council to establish a policy requiring the installation of curb cuts or ramps on all sidewalks by 2010.
  • Helped the City establish an ADA Barrier Free Hotline (phone) and an ADA link on the City's web site.
    Inaugurated Fresno's annual "Disability Awareness Day" which takes place every October, to celebrate Disability Awareness Month.
  • Facilitated the installation of Fresno's first audible accessible pedestrian signal (APS) on the corner of Shaw and Valentine.
  • Worked with the Traffic Engineering Department to extend pedestrian crossing times at many major inter-sections where traffic signals exist.
  • Advocated the installation of sidewalks and curb ramps at Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad crossing.
  • Helped City Council develop a policy that all future housing developments be designed with sidewalks on both sides of the street.
  • Consulted with architects and the Diamond Group of the Grizzlies Baseball Stadium to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
