What Does the ADA Mean for Fresno?

City Hall and every other city owned building must have entrances, hallways, restrooms and telephones that accommodate the needs of disabled Fresnans. Street corners must be ramped to provide accessible travel for wheelchair users, and sidewalks must be cleared of all obstacles creating problems for wheelchair users and blind pedestrians. City Council deliberations and Soroyan theatre performances must accommodate deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons by providing sign interpreters or assistive listening devices, and accommodate blind or visually impaired people by providing programs and agendas in Braille, large print or tape cassette.

All Fresno Area Express (FAX) buses must have functioning lifts enabling wheelchair users to travel around the city indepentently. Handy Ride, the City's paratransit system, mustprovide service for members of the disabled community unable to use FAX buses.

All future construction of buildings, housing developments, hotels, restaurants, stores, and movie theaters, etc. must follow Federal ADA and state guidelines.
