City of Fresno, Disability Advisory Commission (DAC)
Recently, Mayor Ashley Swearengin met with Mr. Robert Hand, the Chair of the City of Fresno Disability Advisory Commission (DAC). At that meeting, the Mayor affirmed the importance of the Commission’s charge to advise the Mayor, City Council and staff on issues affecting persons with disabilities and seek avenues for improving services for people with disabilities in the larger community. The Mayor also expressed her appreciation for the service of the Commissioners.
The DAC is made up of seven community leaders appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council; five of the seven members must be persons with disabilities. The current Commission represents many years of professional work and personal experience with a range of disabilities. The Chair, Mr. Hand, also serves as Executive Director of the Center for Independent Living (CIL). The Vice Chair, Ms. Lillian Fillpot, is the Systems Change Advocate at CIL, and a former Clinical Supervisor for the Fresno County Departmental of Behavioral Health. Mr. Russell Hoeltzer is the Director of the Blind and Low Vision Resource Center and owner of VisionTech Solutions, Inc. Ms. Mary Beth Randall is a Board Member of the Guide Dog Users of California and member of the California Council of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind. Mr. Ron Sheppard is the Section 504 Coordinator and Director of Home Hospital Instruction for the Fresno Unified School District.
The newest member of the Commission is Ms. Rachelle Taylor, a student at the San Joaquin Valley College of Law and a clerk with the Sutton Hatmaker Law Corporation. Ms. Taylor was appointed by Mayor Swearengin and confirmed by City Council on June 25, 2009.
The Commission meetings are held on the second Monday of the month, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm in City Council Chambers. All are welcome to attend. There are no regularly-scheduled meetings in August or November. For information about past meetings or upcoming agendas, please see below.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
First Annual DAC Achievement Award
The Disability Advisory Commission is pleased to announce the recipients of the Disability Advisory Commission (DAC) Achievement Award. The purpose of the Achievement Award is to recognize individuals and organizations that have improved the quality of life of residents or visitors with disabilities in the City of Fresno.
The 2009 individual recipient was Dr. Edwin Eames. Dr. Eames received numerous nominations commending him for his many years of work as an advocate people with disabilities, public transportation and service animal education.
The organizational recipient was LARCS. LARCS is a local organization with a 52-year history of serving people with developmental disabilities and providing support to organizations like ARC, Addict School, Break the Barriers, Special Olympics and RATA school.
Both recipients were selected at the Dace's September 14, 2009 meeting and will be honored as part of the commemoration of October as Disability Awareness Month.
FYI Opens New Service Animal Area
FRESNO, CA (July 31, 2009) - Fresno Yosemite International Airport is pleased to announce the opening of the new Service Animal Relief Area.
