Used Motor Oil and Oil Filter Recycling

Motor oil (new and used) is toxic. One gallon of motor oil can pollute one million gallons of drinking water, a one-year supply for 50 people. In fact, used motor oil accounts for 40% of oil pollution in America’s waterways. Please recycle used motor oil. DO NOT pour it down the gutter, on the ground or into the storm drain. Currently 90% of used oil filters are not recycled. However, recycling one ton of used oil filters recovers 1,700 pounds of steel and up to 60 gallons of used motor oil.
Improper disposal of Used Motor Oil is a violation of California Health & Safety Code 25189.6
Helpful Hint
In case of an oil spill, cover the area with an absorbent material such as cat litter or sawdust. Then call 621-1111 for instructions on proper disposal of the material. This program is brought to you and is funded by a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
The City of Fresno offers two easy ways to recycle your used motor oil and oil filters after your oil change.
EASIEST: Curbside Recycling
Have your used motor oil and/or oil filter picked up at your home through the once a week Curbside Recycling Program (available to Fresno’s single family residential customers only, with a limit of two gallons per week). The City offers special program containers FREE OF CHARGE.
1. Call 621-1452 and request free containers for used oil and/or oil filters (use special program containers only). Containers will be delivered by the Solid Waste Management Division
2. Pour used oil into the program container (make sure oil is not contaminated with water or any chemicals). Drained oil filters should be placed in the program’s plastic bag.
3. Place used motor oil and oil filters on the curbside on your collection day. DO NOT place oil or special containers on or inside the blue cart.
EASY: Certified Collection Centers
1. Locate a Certified Collection Center near you. See list at the bottom of this page or call 1(800) CLEAN-UP for locations.
2. Drop off your used motor oil and/or oil filters during business hours. DO NOT leave used oil outside the Collection Centers when no one is in attendance or after business hours.
3. Certified Collection Centers will pay you 16¢ per gallon for your used motor oil. Contaminated oil (oil with traces of anti-freeze, paint or other substances) will NOT be accepted by the Collection Centers, OR by your curbside collection program. To receive information on recycling contaminated oil, used antifreeze, paint and other household hazardous materials, call 621-1111.
