About Us

 

The Department of Public Utilities is responsible for the provision of water, sewer, wastewater, sanitation and solid waste (trash, recycling and green waste) services for most residential and commercial customers within City limits. (There are a few exceptions in certain special districts, county islands or for certain commercial customers.) In order to provide these services, the Department is comprised of five operating divisions plus an administrative division:

Water Division

  • Pump, Treat and Deliver an Average of 140 Million Gallons Per Day
  • Repair, Plan, Design and Construct Water Supply Infrastructure
  • Provide Long & Short-Range Water Planning and Water Resource Management
  • Develop and Promote Water Conservation Programs
  • Operate a Comprehensive Water Quality Monitoring Program to Protect Public Health
  • General System Statistics:
    -250 Wells
    -450,000 Service Population
    -110 Square Mile Service Area (Includes Both City and County Areas)

Solid Waste Division

  • Collect Residential and Commercial Solid Waste, Recyclables and Green Waste Throughout the Community, at Least Once-a-Week
  • Disposal of Solid Waste at County Landfill Provide and Maintain Containers
  • Respond to Customer Complaints and Concerns
  • Roll-Off and Compactor Service Available to Residential, Multi-Family and Commercial Customers

Sewer Maintenance Division

  • Clear Mainline Blockage
  • Clean Up Sewer Spills
  • Locate Lateral Line
  • USA Marking of Underground Utilities
  • Roach Control
  • Missing or Loose Manhole Covers
  • Odor Control
  • Clean Sewer Lines

Wastewater Division

  • Treatment and Subsequent Reclamation of 72 Million Gallons of Wastewater per Day Generated in the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area
  • Beneficial Reuse of Biosolids
  • Operate and Maintain 1,700 Acres of Infiltration/Disposal Ponds
  • Process Winery Wastes
  • Educate the Public, Business and Industry on Wastewater Issues
  • Prevent the Introduction of Pollutants Which Will Interfere With the Operation of the POTW
  • Inspect and Maintain Permits on All Significant Industrial Users
  • Provide Laboratory Analysis for Process Control, State and Federal Requirements
  • Energy Recovery From Digester Gas Produced as a By-Product of Wastewater Treatment

Community Sanitation Division

  • Provide timely, accountable services to the public that include residential and major street sweeping on permanently paved public streets, litter control, and removal of excess trash and debris.

This is accomplished through the following programs:

  • Operation CleanUp
    --Removal of excess debris.
  • Street Sweeping
    --Routine neighborhood and major street curb and gutter mechanical sweeping.
  • Litter Control
    -- Manual removal of trash and debris in main thoroughfares.
    -- Services for downtown events and parades.
  • Work Assistance
    -- Volunteer Groups, as well as: Fresno County Adult Probation, CA State Parole, CA Youth Authority, Fresno County Juvenile Probation, Local Conservation Corps (EOC), Hope Now for Youth.

Administration Division
