ACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENT
03/31/2008
A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (C.A.L.E.A.) will arrive on Saturday, April 12th, 2008 to examine all aspects of Fresno Police Department's policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

Verification by the team that the Fresno Police Department meets the Commission's sate-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation - a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, April 14th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. The session will be conducted in the New Exhibit Hall, meeting rooms 2015 - 2018, 848 M Street, in Fresno.

If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he / she may do so by telephone. The public may call (559) 621-2107 on Monday, April 14th, 2008, between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with C.A.L.E.A. standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Fresno Police Department. Contact Pat Hayden at (559) 621-2100.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Fresno Police Department's ability to meet the accreditation standards are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (C.A.L.E.A.) 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215.

The Fresno Police Department has to comply with 380 standards in order to gain accreditation status. According to Chief of Police Jerry Dyer, "The Fresno Police Department is now among the elite, as fewer than 4% of law enforcement agencies nationwide have been accredited through C.A.L.E.A. However, accreditation is more than a status; it is a commitment to our community that we will do all that we can to maintain the trust of our citizens as we pursue excellence in policing."

The C.A.L.E.A. Program Manager for the Fresno Police Department is Ms. Christie Goddard. She said the assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.

The assessors are: Major Robert Stack (Lexington Division of Police), Captain Vincent Dauro (Huntsville Police Department) and Sergeant Curtis Winn (Prairie Village, Kansas, Police Department).

"Once the C.A.L.E.A. assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status," Ms. Goddard stated.

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with the standards under which it was initially accredited.
