Roeding Park Improvements/Tactical Operation
08/17/2006

Fresno Mayor Alan Autry, Police Chief Jerry Dyer and Parks and Recreation Director Randall Cooper announce several changes beginning tomorrow (8/18) that will immediately result in a safer Roeding Park.

Friday morning at 6 A.M., the first of two new restrooms will be delivered and installed in Roeding Park. The new restrooms offer improved lighting, entrances facing the streets, improved interior design which makes it easier to identify lewd activity, vandal resistant  fixtures and graffiti resistant walls.

The new bathrooms are a direct result of Mayor Autry’s  immediate response to the increased lewd acts occurring in the old Roeding Park bathrooms.

Mayor Autry has also ordered nearly 50 street lights and 12 permanent video cameras installed throughout Roeding Park. Those projects should be completed by November of 2006.

In addition to the infrastructure improvements at Roeding Park, Police Chief Jerry Dyer will implement a tactical plan to address the lewd acts occurring in the park. The operation will include increased patrols to address the lewd conduct and temporary encampments which are visible in areas of the park. Plainclothes and undercover officers will also conduct enforcement operations, targeting any illegal activity they identify.

The first bathroom will be delivered and installed tomorrow at 6 A.M. at Eucalyptus Grove, in the Northeast end of Roeding Park. The media is invited and interview opportunities will be available.

For more information or to schedule an interview with Chief Dyer on the tactical operation, please contact Public Information Officer Jeff Cardinale at 621-2486. For more information on the infrastructure improvements, please contact Public Affairs Officer Rhonda Jorn at 621-7777.
