Learning and Living Well in America
08/05/2005
This summer, Hmong children actively engaged in a variety of academic and cultural activities that promoted their personal growth. After attending Stone Soup’s Culture Camp, which ran from June 13th to July 22nd, newly arrived Hmong refugee children are now equipped with knowledge of the alphabet, shapes, numbers and colors and are ready for kindergarten. Thanks to the Office of Disctrict Four, Council Member Larry Westerland, the children were transported everyday for six weeks to Stone Soup’s Culture Camp. Hmong college mentors, retired teachers and dedicated volunteers supported the academic strengths of these Hmong children while enrichment activities such as traditional Hmong folk dance and qeej (instrument) performance boosted their multi-cultural confidence. Families are learning to live well as new Americans in their new home.
