Life Skills Training
Fresno Police Reorganization of Youth Outreach Programs
Fresno Police partnering with Parks and Recreation and the Intermediate Schools to provide after school activities while teaching Life Skills Training
THE FRESNO POLICE IS COMMITTED TO COMBING EFFORTS OF EDUCATORS, LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS.
How will this be Accomplished?
The Fresno Police Department has undertaken a reorganization of the Youth and Community Services Section. This reorganization entails unifying our existing programs of P.A.L. (Police Activities League) and the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse and Resistance Education). In place of teaching the D.A.R.E. curriculum in the elementary schools, FPD will begin a pilot program teaching "Life Skills Training." This new program emphasizes character traits in children. The instructors will teach in three middle schools from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The instructors will then transition to a recreations site to continue with the training during the critical after school time between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Implementation
The police department will work closely with the Intermediate schools and the Parks and Recreation during this transition. The transition to a recreation site after school will facilitate the critical time for youth in our community. The goal of this program is to teach character traits to the youth of Fresno and develop pride within their community. In turn, the after school programs should reduce the opportunity to become involved in criminal activity.
Program Endorsements
The Life Skills Training was written by Ph.D. Gilbert J. Botvin and is highly rated by the following agencies:
- California Dept. of Education
- U.S. Dept. of Education Expert Panel.
- Centers for Substance Abuse and prevention.
This curriculum is also recommended by Fresno Unified School District and is part of their Safe Schools and Healthy Grant. This will allow the training to be provided by F.U.S.D.
Locations for the Pilot Program
The curriculum is going to be taught in the three F.U.S.D. schools from March 31, 2003 through the rest of the schools year. The three schools will be:
- Tehipite
- Sequoia
- Cooper
After School Sites
The three sites for the after school pilot program are:
- Romain
- Mosqueda Center
- Quigley Park
These three are within one mile from the three schools where the instruction will take place. This will allow for students to have a place to go and continue in the Life Skills Program. Youth that are active in the program will be rewarded with activities associated with our PAL program. Some of the activities will include trips to Wild Water, camping trips and use of the very popular climbing rock wall.
Future Plans
Fresno Police Department plans to implement the program in all five policing districts. This will include 19 intermediate schools and impact approximately 16,000 intermediate school aged youth.
