Duties & Eligibility

The responsibilities of our Citizens on Patrol are varied and are growing as time goes by. The following are some of the duties performed by our members:
 




  1. High visibility non-confrontational patrol. 
  2. Assisting officers/community service officers as needed. 
  3. Traffic control. 
  4. Storing/impounding marked abandoned vehicles. 
  5. Crime scene preservation. 
  6. Re-supply of district stations. 
  7. Search for missing children/adults. 
  8. Book property. 
  9. Transport department vehicles. 
  10. Transport victims/witnesses. 
  11. Operate radar display boards. 
  12. Handicap parking enforcement. 
  13. Assist at special events. 
  14. Holiday patrol of shopping centers.

Monthly training sessions are held to update COP members. Training is also held on a monthly basis to address concerns specific to the district that the individual COP is assigned to.

Eligibility

The following is a list of requirements for acceptance into our program. 

  1. Be 21 years of age or older. 
  2. Possess a valid California Driver’s License. Applicants must also have and maintain a satisfactory driving record. 
  3. Have no felony convictions. 
  4. Have no misdemeanor convictions within two years of filing an application. 
  5. Possess competent written/verbal English skills. 
  6. Successfully complete the Fresno Police Department’s Citizens on Patrol Academy and an oral interview. 
  7. Attend a monthly district team meeting. 
  8. Attend a monthly COP training meeting. 
  9. Perform 16 hours of patrol duty each month. 
  10. Pass a background check. 
  11. Be in good physical condition and present a physician-signed medical waiver. 
  12. Purchase own uniform.
