Permit Center
The Permit Center provides public counter services, permit and plan check processing, and consultation services for local and state code requirements related to the design and construction of commercial and residential structures.
Plans Examiners from the permit center are responsible for reviewing plans submitted for the construction of Single Family Residences and additions, and interior tenant improvements to new commercial and industrial structures to verify conformance to applicable Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Energy codes. Staff also provides public counter service for issuance of construction permits (Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Grading), plan check submittals and general information related to code and construction requirements. Architects and engineers specialize in structural, life safety, disabled access, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and property grading perform plan reviews of complex commercial projects, to serve the public in identifying code requirements and to insure the safety of the general public that utilize these structures.
What is a Building Permit?
A building permit gives you legal permission to start construction of a building project in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
When Do You Need a Permit?
The best way to find out if you need a permit if you are uncertain is to call and discuss your plans before beginning construction to determine whether you need a permit. Even if a permit is not needed, we will answer construction questions and may provide valuable advice.
Permits are usually required for the following:
- New buildings
- Additions (bedrooms, bathrooms, family rooms, etc.)
- Residential work (decks, garages, fences, fireplaces, pools, water heaters, etc.)
- Renovations (garage conversions, basement furnishings, kitchen expansions, re-roofing, etc.)
- Electrical systems and repairs
- Plumbing systems and repairs
- HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems
