Inspections

Inspection services provide inspections during the construction process for compliance to the approved plans. Field inspectors from Residential Combination, Building, Electrical, and Plumbing/Mechanical perform periodic inspections at various stages of construction. Each inspector is assigned an area of the city and performs daily inspections in that area. Inspection services work in concert with the permit center to insure field conditions and installation requirements are in conformance to approved plans and applicable codes. Residential Inspectors perform combination inspections (Building, Electrical, and Plumbing/Mechanical) for all single family residential projects, which provide increased response and service to the public during the entire construction process.

The City of Fresno utilizes the California State Building Code (CBC-2001) and other applicable codes and standards relating to building construction.

The purpose of the inspections are to provide minimum standards to safeguard life or limb, health, property and public welfare by regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, location and maintenance of all buildings and structures within the City.

The provisions of the code apply to the construction, alteration, moving, demolition, repair, maintenance and use of any building or structure within the City.

We encourage you to call with any questions about construction projects being considered or already in progress. Our general telephone number is (559)-621-8116. Support staff will route calls to the appropriate individuals. Because inspection staff spends most time out of City Hall, it’s more effective to call and set up appointments with inspectors before coming in.

MOST COMMON REASONS FOR INSPECTION DISAPPROVALS

  • Scope of work not clearly defined.
  •  Incomplete Plans and Calculations.
  •  Encroachments into required building setbacks.
  • Site conditions not addressed. (Soils conditions, Bluff Preservation Area, Disabled Access, related Planning and Zoning requirements).
