Standard Program
Standardized Component Overview

The standardized component of ASR provides two services aide staff per site to provide supervised recreation, games, and craft projects for any and all children who want to attend. Staff also provides general supervision of the school playground during after school hours. ASR’s attendance numbers fluctuate depending on the dismissal times at each school, school programming and weather conditions. As of fall 2004 the program became “standardized” at all our sites. Changes have included:

  • Requiring children and their families to sign up for the program.
  • Providing thematic lessons each week with linked educational and enrichment activities; Monthly training for recreation leaders on program delivery.
  • Enhancing staff and child relationships.
  • Clear performance expectations for staff.
Participant Rules

After School Recreation is a drop-in recreation program for elementary school children. The recreation leader leads preplanned daily activities. Typical recreation activities include arts & crafts, playground games, non-competitive sports, table games and environmental education activities.

Due to the fact that children are not signed in or out by a parent/guardian, and can leave at will, After School Recreation should not be regarded as child care. Here are some comparisons that will help you to understand the difference between After School Recreation and child care.

Participants in the After School Recreation Program Must:
Provide a signed parent permission form to attend this program
Check-in and check-out with recreation leader
Stay in a designated area
Check out equipment with recreation leader
Return all equipment
Get along with others
Tell a recreation leader when there is a problem
Respect all people and all equipment
Follow the directions of the recreation leader
Follow all school rules

Helpful hints to make this work for your child/children:
Meet the recreation leader (in person-the shack doesn’t have a phone!)
Ask the leader for their program rules and go over the rules with your child/children.
Check-in with the leader weekly not just when there is a problem.

After visiting the program, meeting the leader, and reviewing the rules decide if this is the best environment for your child/children. Also keep in mind that the recreation leader will be monitoring your child’s behavior for compliance to the program rules
