After School Recreation Program
ASR Enrichment Component Overview

After School Enrichment is provided at fifty two elementary schools from approximately 2 -5 pm depending on the school schedule and at Neighborhood Parks from 5 – 7 pm every other week. The enrichment component provides one recreation specialist rotating between three sites (1 site a week) to offer more specialized programs. These programs include: music, dance, drama, character development (group goal setting activities) and formal art. Enrichment leaders work in cooperation with the school leaders and neighborhood park leaders to enlist no more than twenty children a week to participate in the program.

Activities such as dance, drama, performing and visual arts, and character development enhance the importance of teamwork, respect and responsibility. These activities develop several positive outcomes (see below).

Character Development Outcomes:
  • Increased sense of responsibility to self and others.
  • Decreased tension between diverse groups.
  • New skills to enable better decision-making.

Art and Music Program Outcomes:
  • Increased opportunity for self-expression and creativity in a risk free environment.
  • Increased self esteem with relation to creativity.
  • Increased enthusiasm for producing art.
  • Increased understanding of the practical uses of art.
