09/29/06  Local Kids To Compete In National Event
The City of Fresno Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department (PRCS) is hosting a local qualifier of the NFL’s national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 8 -15. Valley kids have been invited to participate for free and compete separately against their peers in punting, passing and kicking. The media is invited to take part in the event and meet Raiders Cliff Branch, Mervyn Fernandez and Jeff Barnes, 49ers Dana McLemore and Eason Ransom as well as the Coach, players and cheerleaders of the Central Valley Coyotes arena football team. >more

09/14/06  Children's Festival Expected To Draw Record Number
WHAT: “Kids Just Wanna Have Fun” is the popular theme of this year’s 11th annual free Children’s Festival at the Mosqueda Community Center. The festival, which has experienced thousands of participants in the past, anticipates an overall attendance of more than 5,000 kids and families. Carnival games, pony rides, bounce houses, train rides and water games are just a few of the kid friendly and family oriented activities taking place at the event. >more

05/29/06  Mayor Autry Launches New Gang Task Force Initiative
FRESNO, CA (May 29, 2006) – Mayor Alan Autry declares his commitment to public safety with the formation of the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Initiative Task Force in a press conference on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 10:00am outside of Council Chambers at Fresno’s City Hall. Given the violence and other characteristics associated with gangs, heightened cooperation between law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies – prosecutors, parole and probation, jails and courts, crime laboratories and Federal agencies together with social, community service and educational agencies is critical to the success of gang suppression efforts. Mayor Autry stated, “We know that a criminal or gang member is created long before he or she commits their first crime or joins a gang. >more

05/15/06  City of Fresno to Create Universally Accessible Park
WHAT: The City of Fresno Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department (PRCS) would like to invite the media to join Mayor Alan Autry and PRCS Director Randy Cooper as they announce the dedication of four acres to create a universally accessible park. The four acres, located in West/Central Fresno, will feature multiple amenities designed to be universally accessible to all citizens regardless of age or ability. As PRCS has already begun community meetings to plan the project and several park concepts and partners will be announced. >more

04/26/06  Mayor Autry Pays Homage to 70 Years of the Veterns Memorial Auditorium and Celebrates the Future of this Historic Building
FRESNO, CA (April 26, 2006) - The City of Fresno Department of Parks Recreation & Community Services (PRCS) would like to invite the media to join Mayor Alan Autry, Council Member Cynthia Sterling, PRCS Director Randy Cooper and Memorial Auditorium Restoration Society’s Chuck Leavitt for an important announcement about the future of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, it’s 70th Anniversary celebration and the establishment of a new Cultural Arts Team (CAT) on Thursday, April 27th at 12:00 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. PRCS is also inviting City and County employees as well as all citizens to learn about CAT’s initiative to restore the Veterans Memorial Auditorium and invest in its future as a venue for performing arts, educational opportunities and cultural entertainment. Following the announcements, those in attendance will be treated to a sampling of the talent within the Cultural Arts Team including brief performances by the California Opera Association, Children’s Musical Theatreworks and Cynthia Merrill’s Cotillion Dancers. >more

02/21/06  Positive Changes at the Hinton Community Center: Mayor & Community Leaders to Announce New Plan for Hinton Center Operations and Launch the Coretta Scott King Learning Center
WHAT: The media is invited to join the Mayor, City Manager and representatives of the Hinton Board of Directors as the City officially turns the Hinton Center back over to the community. Parks, Recreation & Community Services (PRCS) will be opening the doors to the ‘Coretta Scott King Learning Center’ inside Hinton. The Center is equipped with a computer lab, multi-media room, quiet room for children to read and a library where children can receive a book to keep. >more

02/15/06  Creating Family Wellness: City of Fresno Awarded Grant to Fight Childhood Obesity and Diabetes
FRESNO, CA (February 15, 2006) - The City of Fresno Department of Parks Recreation & Community Services (PRCS) would like to invite the media to join City Manager Andy Souza, Aetna’s Fresno Service Center Site Manager Raynette Wright, PRCS Recreation Manager Mary Jane Fitzpatrick, and Judy Fern of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the Ted C. Wills Community Center Gymnasium on Friday February 17, 2006 at 3:30pm for an exciting announcement on how Aetna & the Mayor’s Fitness Council are making it possible for PRCS to help Fresno families combat childhood obesity and diabetes. As a result of a generous Aetna Foundation Regional Community Health Grant, PRCS will be implementing a hands-on strategy within its youth sports program to engage the participants, motivate the parents and educate the whole family on healthy eating, the importance of an active lifestyle, the severe consequences of obesity and the real threat of diabetes. >more
