Burn Aware School Fire Safety Program

The school program has been presented annually to approximately 28,000 students since 1985. By the end of the 2004-2005 school year, nearly 468,000 students attending either public and private schools in the City of Fresno will have seen the three fire safety programs.

The three Burn Aware School Programs are:

  • "Personal Fire Safety" ("Stop, Drop & Roll," & "Cool A Burn")
  • "Exit Drills in the Home" ("E.D.I.T.H.")
  • "Principles of Fire Safety" (Quiz Show)

The programs are rotated annually and presented in an assembly setting to all first, second and third graders. A Burn Aware presenter introduces the students to the program, then shows a videotape, which illustrates fire safety messages.

Each program has a learning component that allows students to actively participate in the learning process by interacting with each other and the presenter. At the end of the assembly, stickers and activity booklets are given to students to reinforce the fire safety lessons they learned.

Two new programs are being introduced to increase awareness of fire safety principles to Kindergarten, fourth, and fifth grade students.

The kindergarten program uses an entertaining, easy-to-understand format to teach children how 9-1-1 can help them in an emergency. All materials are provided to the schools free of charge. The program is designed to fit into the typical school day curriculum.

This program also comes with an activity booklet, stickers, bookmark, and a pencil for each student. An Emergency 9-1-1 video that follows a family of telephones on their adventure to rid their home of danger injury and fire compliments the materials and can be checked out from the Fire Department by calling (559) 621-4181. Our ultimate goal is to reach every kindergarten classroom in the city of Fresno.

Fire safety videos that are both entertaining and educational have been added to the Fire Department's video library to target children in the fourth and fifth grades, as well. These videos will be used in some after school programs and are also available for checkout.
