In 1984, Fresno was a city of approximately 300,000 people, covered an area of approximately 80 square miles, and was enjoying a period of increasing growth. With this growth came an increase in fires, particularly in residences, and the Fire Department began exploring various ways of reducing these losses and injuries.
Late in 1984, the Department applied for and received a federal grant being offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)/U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) which provided for the establishment of a community volunteer fire prevention organization. The goals of such an organization would be to develop and implement a community-wide network of fire prevention programs.A board of Directors was soon seated, Burn Aware established its non-profit status with the State of California, and the Board set about the business of providing public fire safety education to Fresno. In a matter of a few months, two major programs were developed (the School Fire Safety Program and the Senior Smoke Detector Program). A few months later, the existing Juvenile Firesetter Program was brought under the aegis of the Burn Aware Organization. By late 1985, the programs were up and running.
Burn Aware has now been in continued existence for over 20 years. Fresno has grown to become a large metropolis of over 446,000 people and covers nearly 105 square miles. In that time, more than 337,385 students in the first, second and third grands of all schools in Fresno have seen the important fire safety messages in the School Program. And over 4,000 smoke detectors have been installed in the homes of senior citizens in Fresno. Through the continuing efforts of Burn Aware and the Fresno Fire Department, important fire prevention and life safety messages continue to be provided to the entire Fresno Community.
