Start at Home
The best way to reduce injuries and deaths due to child-set fires is to start at home.
- Teach children about the dangerousness of fire. This includes discussion about how fire is a tool, which can be used by adults if they are careful and responsible.
- Have working smoke detectors located on every level of your home. Make sure to have smoke detectors in every bedroom as well. Test the detectors once per month, and change the batteries at least twice per year.
- Have working fire extinguishers in your home and make sure everyone knows how to work them. There should be a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and the garage.
- Keep matches and lighters in a metal container out of the reach of children. If necessary, used a lockable container.
- Create a fire escape plan and practice it several times a year. Have a specific family meeting place outside, far enough away from the house to be safe.
Volunteer
Volunteering time in local programs can also help reduce the number of child-set fires.
- The Juvenile Fire Education Program is often looking for volunteers to help with our fire safety education classes.
- There are several organizations located in Fresno, which host fire safety events. Contact Central California Burn Aware, the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, or the Fresno Fire Department for upcoming events.
- Become a mentor. Fresno PAL (Police Activities League) is looking for mentors for children in need of a caring adult.
