Juvenile Fire Education Program

The mission of the Juvenile Fire Education Program is to identify and reduce the fire setting behavior of children who have been referred to the program because of their interest in fire. The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce the number of children engaging in unsupervised fire activity, thus reducing property loss and loss of life. In order to meet these goals, assessments, referrals, and fire education classes are provided to the community free of charge.

The Juvenile Fire Education Program is part of the City of Fresno Fire Department and Central California Burn Aware.


Fire safety education is important for all children and parents to learn. Our education class includes information regarding basic fire science, emergency preparedness, fire safety, fire prevention, and the possible legal consequences of playing with fire or setting fires.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT FIRESETTING:

  • Each year, about 4,000 people die and 20,000 people are injured by fires in the country.
  • Fresno has been ranked the city with the 5th highest incidence of arson crimes in the country.
  • Arson crimes have the highest rate of juvenile involvement.
  • Approximately 55% of arson fires in the country are set by children.
  • Fire play behavior not dealt with has an 81% chance of being repeated.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM?

  • Children who have been caught playing with fire tools, such as matches, lighters, stovetops, and accelerants can learn about the dangers of fire and the consequences involved of firesetting.
  • Children who have expressed an interest in fire can also benefit from our fire safety classes.
  • Parents can learn about fire safety, emergency preparedness, and juvenile fire play.
  • Community groups such as boy and girl scout troops, church groups, schools, and after school clubs are welcome to schedule fire safety classes for their members.
  • Everyone can benefit from the Juvenile Fire Education Program! We welcome the opportunity to work with community members to raise fire safety awareness throughout Fresno.
