Burn Aware School Fire Safety Program
The Burn Aware School Fire Safety Program has been presented to more than 28,000 students, annually, since 1985. By the end of the 2006-2007 school years, nearly 524,000 students attending either public or private schools in the City of Fresno will have seen the three fire safety programs. The Burn Aware School Fire Safety Programs are:
"Personal Fire Safety" ("Stop, Drop & Roll," & "Cool A Burn")
"Exit Drills in the Home" ("E.D.I.T.H.")
"Principles of Fire Safety" (Quiz Show)
These programs are designed to fit into the typical school day curriculum and are rotated annually. The program is presented in an assembly setting to all first, second and third grade students. A Burn Aware presenter introduces the subject to the students and then shows a videotape relating to that subject. The contents of the video illustrate specific fire safety messages. At the end of the assembly, stickers and activity booklets are given to students to reinforce the fire safety lessons they learned. All of the materials are provided to the schools and students at no charge.
Each program has a learning component that allows students to actively participate in the learning process by interacting with each other and the presenter.
In March 2006, the Kindergarten Program “Emergency Dial 911” was started. This program uses an entertaining, easy-to-understand format to teach children how 9-1-1 can help them in the event of an emergency. The students watch an “Emergency 9-1-1” video which follows a family of telephones on their adventure to rid their home of danger, injury and fire. The program also comes with an activity booklet, stickers, bookmark, and a pencil for each student. An estimated 4,000 kindergarten students have participated in this program. Our ultimate goal is to reach every kindergarten classroom within the City of Fresno.
Fire safety videos that are both entertaining and educational have been added to the Fire Department's video library to target children in the fourth and fifth grades, as well. These videos will be used in some after school programs and are also available for the public to checkout.
