Message from Chief J. Robert Brown, Jr.
Thank you for visiting the Fresno Fire Department website. Our department is one of the oldest fire departments within the United States. Consequently, our members take a great deal of pride in delivering a wide variety of services to the public we serve.
Services are delivered through the six divisions within the department:
- Administration provides for policy administration, public and interagency relations, personnel and MOU administration, Citywide emergency management, recruitment, testing, and workers compensation management.
- Budget provides for budget and grant administration, financial planning, contract administration, accounts payable/receivable, and clerical support.
- Operations provides emergency response in firefighting, EMS, hazmat, and urban search and rescue. In 2010 the Department responded to 32,860 emergencies. 21,000 calls were medical in nature and 12,220 were fire and/or service calls. The department responded to 2,195 structure fires of which 794 were working structure fires. Total fire loss in 2010 was $22,300,694. The department responds from 24 fire stations in 3 battalions with an on-duty staffing level of 79 firefighters per shift. FFD staffs 19 engines, 5 trucks, and two Aircraft Rescue/Firefighting apparatus.
- Training provides all hazard in-service and mandated training along with management of the emergency services communications system.
- Prevention and Investigation provides fire code enforcement, inspection services, issues fire permits, plan checks, fire investigations, background investigations, and internal affairs.
- Support Services provides logistics support, fire equipment and light vehicle maintenance and repair, and maintenance of emergency backup power systems.
The Fire Department utilized 334.7 sworn positions and 40 civilian positions for a total of 374.7 positions in fiscal year 2011. FY12 will see a decrease of 17.05 positions for a total department strength of 357.65.
