Labor Force Characteristics
Located in California's fertile Central Valley, Fresno serves as the financial, trade, commercial, and educational center for Central California.  It occupies a large portion of the central San Joaquin Valley, with thousands of acres dedicated to agriculture.  According to 2007 population estimates, Fresno County is home to over 900,000 persons, a growth of 1.8 percent over 2006 estimates.  By the year 2020, the county is projected to have a population exceeding 1.1 million residents.

Fresno County's unemployment rate dropped 1 percentage point in 2006.  The county's labor force exhibits a persistent growth pattern - gaining 6.4 percent, since 2000. Areas with seasonal economies, such as Fresno's agriculture industry, tend to have higher unemployment.

Fresno County's industry employment gained a total of 19,400 jobs over the years 2002 - 2006.  Three industries led job growth:  construction; professional and business services; and educational and health services.
