Perea Proposes New Solar Loan Program
03/24/2009

Fresno, CA (March 24, 2009) During the March 24th, 2009 Council meeting Councilmember Henry T. Perea introduced an innovative new plan to finance solar energy systems for homeowners. The proposal, which passed unanimously, is based on similar plans in San Diego, Berkley and Palm Spring that allow for solar home improvement loans that can be repaid through property tax bills. The balance of the loans stay attached to the property even if a home is sold. These types of loans will allow homeowners to make solar upgrades a realistic priority without continuing to pay off a loan for improvements to homes they no longer own. City staff will return to Council with details to implement this proposal.

“We’ve tried a few plans to make solar upgrades for homeowners a priority and I’m hoping this is the one that makes the difference. Solar will need to be an integral part of Fresno’s new economy if we’re going to thrive as a City. Hopefully this will be one of many steps forward toward renewable energy as a norm in our community.”
