Perea Opposes Judicial Order
02/10/2009
Fresno, CA (February 10, 2009) Councilmember Henry T. Perea publicly announces his opposition of a federal court order to release 40-60 thousand inmates to reduce overcrowding in prisons.
“These criminals are most likely going to settle in low income communities that are already struggling to maintain police and city services during this recession. Our poorest citizens will be the ones to deal with an increased threat in their neighborhoods every day. There has to be a better way to deal with problems in our prison system other than putting public safety at risk. I will not and cannot support a plan that passes the buck to our poorest communities and I will be asking the City Attorney and Chief of Police to present the City Council with options for fighting this release.”
