Perea Helps Bring Light to Belmont
10/17/2007

Fresno, CA (October 17, 2007) Council President Henry T. Perea is pleased to announce that street lighting along Belmont Avenue is scheduled to be updated starting this month. The issue was originally brought forward in November of 2005 when Council President Perea began holding community meetings with business and property owners on Belmont. One of the primary concerns voiced at those meeting was the lack of sufficient lighting in the area. The existing streetlights, which met city standards when they were installed, are outdated and no longer provide adequate light. After hearing these concerns Perea spearheaded a Redevelopment Agency project to help improve the area.

“This is great. Business and property owners on Belmont are dedicated to this community, but they need some help attracting more traffic. This project will make people feel safer driving and doing business in the area. I’m looking forward to seeing what a difference these lights are going to make.”

The Redevelopment Agency is funding $592,000 of the project with an additional $4 million coming from State Public Utility funds. The project will result in new updated street lights spaced closer together than the current ones as well as total under-grounding of utility lines. Phase 1 from HWY 41 to Cedar is scheduled to be completed by spring/summer of 2008. A second phase is planned between Cedar and Chestnut and will begin as funds become available.
