Trolley Creek Park
Southeast Fresno became a little greener and a littler warmer on July 9,2004 with the the ribbon cutting ceremony that signaled the opening of Trolley Creek Park, a three acre neighborhood recreational facility. Modeled after the Sloan Johnson Oso de Oro Lake Park in northwest Fresno, Trolley Creek Park now becomes Fresno’s second park to directly cater to special needs citizens. The opening was marked by a celebration that included speeches from several government officials, including District 5 Councilmember Mike Dages. Councilmember Dages was directly involved in the planning of the park and secured an important $20,000 grant from the City of Fresno for its construction.
Located on South Adler Avenue and Huntington Boulevard, Trolley Creek Park is a truly unique addition to Fresno. The park embraces innovative and creative architecture characterized by an historic Fresno theme which showcases the notable landmarks of Fresno: the Water Tower, the Meux Home, and a full-size replica of a 1920 trolley car.
The picturesque facility also represents another step towards solving the recreational space deficiencies of Southeast Fresno. Current City-wide standards dictate that there be .75 recreational acres per 1,000 residents and the area surrounding the new park only has half of the space required. The $1.5 million park has multiple uses, serving as a basin, serving storm water and groundwater recharge needs.
During the ceremony, speakers noted that projects like Trolley Creek Park are essential in efforts to nurture and foster a healthy community. Its construction and design were made possible by its many community supporters, including hundreds of young adult volunteers. Councilmember Dages states, “The final product is a park that not only serves the able-bodied citizens of Fresno, but also those with special needs. By embracing the community as a whole, Trolley Creek Park not only ensures the safety and happiness of children by giving them a safe haven in which to play, but also serves to create a greater sense of pride among the residents of Southeast Fresno. I am proud to have played a role in the creation of this amazing facility for all children to enjoy.”
