City Partners With Fresno State To Improve Amenities And Increase FAX Ridership
05/02/2007

District 4 Council member, Larry Westerlund, is pleased to announce new, improved bus shelters for students and patrons riding City transportation near Fresno State University.

In an effort to improve air quality through increased ridership of public transportation, the Clean Air Fund Implementation Team comprised of University staff met with Fresno Area Express (FAX) for assistance to provide incentives that would increase the use of public transportation around the Fresno State campus.

Council member Westerlund suggested the replacement and improvement of old bus shelters along Shaw Avenue as a way to attract riders. Through a partnership with FAX and the University Plant Operations staff, new distinctive shelters were built and installed along the Shaw Avenue corridor.

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow, May 2, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. to unveil these new bus shelters at the shelter located on Shaw and Maple Avenues. Media parking will be available in the lot in front of the Kremen School of Education where shuttles will be available to transport reporters and photographers to the shelter.

Additional improved bus shelter locations serving Fresno State include: Shaw at Barton, Shaw at Maple, Shaw at Woodrow Avenues and Cedar at Barstow.

Future plans include the installation of two additional shelters at Shaw and Chestnut and Shaw and Cedar and the possible installation of an Automatic Fare Collection system where students can utilize their university identification cards for bus fare.

Speakers at the unveiling will include Council member Larry Westerlund; Cynthia Teniente-Matson, Fresno State Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer; Ken Hamm, City Transportation Director.

Additional participants include:
