District Four Railroad Crossings
08/21/2006
After twenty months of concerted efforts by Councilmember Larry Westerlund, railroad crossings located in District Four will finally be getting the attention and repairs they that desperately need.
Mr. Westerlund partnered with the San Joaquin Valley Railroad to bring his concerns for public safety and neighborhood infrastructure improvements surrounding the railroad crossings located at Cedar, Maple, Chestnut and Shields avenues to Council attention.
Council, sitting as the board for the Redevelopment Agency, voted to approve the railroad crossing improvement project. The project is a collaborative effort with City Council District Four, Public Works, Redevelopment Agency and the San Joaquin Valley Railroad. They will replace the old wooden planking with new and improved concrete planks. The planks will make the crossings much safer and will last years longer than the current wood planks.
"The new concrete planks will certainly improve the health and safety of our citizens”, said Council member Westerlund. He went on to say that "it will also assist in business expansion and new development within the project areas by eliminating a blight condition".
